Rapidly growing hemp is an extremely good substitute for cotton and wood fibres. It needs no insecticides, grows 3-4 meters high in 6 months and when planted on a large scale can help to protect us against the greenhouse effect. Hemp fibre may be compared with flax fibre. It is the strongest and most lasting natural fibre, and hemp textiles are therefore the strongest. It is used for ropes and is currently in an experimental phase for use as building and insulation material, as well as for bio-plastics and car panels. The first Levi Strauss jeans were made from hemp. Wood surplus from the stems can be pressed into board. The edible seeds yield oil. The whole plant is used to produce paper. Due to a shortage of raw material, all hemp is now imported from China and the former Eastern bloc countries. It is expected that in the near future Europe will be able to supply itself with this raw material. Gift from the Green Lands Hemp Eco Store.
